Most are aware of the rate of abortion of babies who are diagnosed in utero with Down syndrome. Many are also aware of Whoopi Goldberg’s pro choice advocating, that she has done over the years. If you are not familiar, you can read more about that here.
We would like to hear what you think. Do you think a vigorous pro choice advocate should be advocating for kids who happen to have Down syndrome? Why or why not? We would love to hear your thoughts!
FYI: The small print on the ad says, “Child advocate”. We guess that advocating has the same start date as the ARC, NDSS, and NDSC, which is after they are born, and not before!

I am grateful to the IDSC for presenting this issue for discussion, as I was unaware of this Toys R Us ad campaign. I believe this is an example of complete hypocrasy for Whoopi Goldberg to present herself as an advocate for individuals with Down Syndrome while also advocating to further the agenda of those who seek to continue the termination/murder of the vast majority of babies who have been diagnosed prenatally.
As a mother of a child with Down Syndrome who did receive a prenatal diagnosis, I am sickened to look at Whoopi Goldberg’s smiling face, posing with a child with Down Syndrome. Ms. Goldberg cannot have it both ways….she is either an advocate for individuals with Ds, or someone who supports the continued destruction of the unborn babies with this diagnosis.

I, for one, do not like it. In fact, it seems like a slap in the face, when you really think about it. Whoopi Goldberg is a very vocal advocate for abortion rights in this country. Therefore, I believe the IDSC should consider Whoopi disqualified from advocating for children, whether typical or with special needs. The other national Down syndrome advocacy groups stop short of this. They may do an excellent job advocating for those individuals who are already born. But that is what makes the IDSC different. Thank you, IDSC, for advocating on behalf of all children, particularly those children with Down syndrome who are most at risk…the unborn, the children who Whoopi feels deserve no legal protection. Statistically, 90% of children with Down syndrome who are diagnosed prenatally will be aborted. The darling little girl who sits on Whoopi’s lap is one of the fortunate ones….in the 10%. Who will advocate for the other 90%? Will Whoopi? No, she will not. Our kids with special needs are at very high risk. And that is why we cannot ignore this advertisement and should speak out against it.

Dear Friends of Life – Ms. Goldberg, who has never kept her pro-abortion sentiments secret, is not a suitable advocate for any child and, in particular, for any child with Down syndrome.
I would recommend that Toys R Us Board of Trustees cut their losses and cancel Goldberg’s contract. The sooner the better. There are other entertainment personalities that respect the lives of all children – born and unborn – so replacing her should not be a problem.
Until I hear that Toys R Us has taken such action I shall shop elsewhere and urge others to do the same.
I do not wish to hear the excuse that Toys R U did not know that Goldberg has promoted child killing in the womb for years. That won’t wash.
More likely, Toys R Us public relations department did know about Goldberg’s anti-life track record, but considered it either unimportant or irrelevant.
It’s time that Corporate America, which funds numerous anti-life causes, mend its ways. Perhaps Toys R Us will decide to lead the way.

I completely agree that Ms. Goldberg should not be portrayed as a child advocate in Toys R Us ads. A child advocate fights FOR children, not against them being born. And what are we teaching the children who look forward to trips to Toys R Us by setting Ms. Goldberg up as a role model, knowing that she encourages the termination of the lives of babies in the womb? I hope they will choose a representative who truly does advocate for children, both before and after those children are born, and I also plan to shop at other places this Christmas unless I hear that they have decided to choose another representative.

I was very sorry to see Whoopi with this beautiful little girl. My son with DS is the light of my life and I can not imagine him not being a part of our family. Whoopi’s political views would be that my child should have been aborted. I would certainly think that another spokesperson would be way more appropriate. I tend to spend my money where people that support abortion do not benefit. Until Whoopi is gone I will be shopping elsewhere. The hypocracy in this picture is amazing. Please Toys R Us take Whoopi out of this picture.

Wow, I was not aware of this until the IDSC posted about it – thank you!
I find it rather disgusting that Whoopi Goldberg would be chosen as the “child advocate” for the Toys R Us Differently-abled guide. While she may claim to be a “child advocate”, it must only be referring to once the children are born. She is not a full child advocate, because she most definitely is not an advocate for the unborn. That is where my problem is with her and representing special needs children. How can someone who has killed so many of her own children, advocate for kids appropriately!
As it is well known, she is pro-choice. So why would she even want to have anything to do with children who she would “recommend” be killed before being born? I guess you can only “love” these kids after they’re born. I don’t think so.

will try to post more later, but….I think whenever we can get someone like WG to even SEE our kids, and allow herself to be touched by them, then we have gained something. I dont necessarily think she is advocating, and I would be interested to see what, if anything, she has said about DS. But that she willingly, happily appeared with a beautiful little girl with DS says something. Others who think it is only “right wing religious conservative nuts” who are ok with DS might just have their eyes opened. Now, if she starts trying to speak on their behalf with outdated bad info, I would be wild. But this doesnt bother me. and generally speaking, Whoopie G BOTHERS me lol.

I can somewhat see your point. Although, the picture does have the words “Child Advocate” on there (It is hard to see, but trust me, it does) and she has a long history of advocating for the protection of the right to take their lives in the womb. So, this conflicts a bit. Also, let’s not forget, it is highly unlikely she is doing this for free. So, while we may like that a hollywood star is in the picture with a child with Ds, it is pretty certain that she is also making money off of us! For me, a better choice would have been Patricia Heaton! But that is me!

Or John McGinley of “Scrubs” who has a son with Down syndrome. I can’t understand the disconnect between someone, like Whoopi, who is perfectly fine with the late term abortion of 90% of our beautiful children, and then takes the label ‘child advocate’. It makes no sense to call her a child advocate, just because she’ll do a photo shoot with a child with Ds.
I am sick to my stomach about this and the lack of response from NDSS, NDSC and NADS to this outrage.

So sorry for being late to the discussion but I am here now with my two cents. As the mother of an amazing 14 month old girl with Down syndrome, I cannot fathom my angel not being here on the Earth with us. She as well as every child whether they are typical or have special needs has a right to life God has given them. God decides who lives or dies as He is the giver of life and the one who decides when life ends. I admire what Whoopi Goldberg is aspiring to do, however if you are advocating for special needs children then shouldn’t you believe that they deserve to be born in the first place? I hope that posing with this beautiful girl has touched Whoopi’s heart and opened her eyes to understand that if that child had been aborted there would be photo shoot for her to pose for. Advocacy is more than a photo op but a real commitment to make change into the lives of those who cannot make change for themselves, namely the unborn.

Not only should her very public stance on abortion disqualify her from representing anything to do with children – particularly those w/ Down syndrome, but can anyone excuse her defense of Roman Polanski and his “not rape rape” of a 13 yr old girl??
Supports abortion
Condones “not rape rape”
Nahhh. Could they do no better than her??

I’ve had this in my thoughts quite a bit lately. At first, I was outraged. As the older sister of a mentally handicapped young lady, I feel strongly for the cause of DS and other mentally disabled persons. I was so enraged to think of Whoopi, who loudly broadcasts her many abortions, being the advocate for DS children with Toys R Us.
Over time, though, I have come to think about what this might mean in the long run. Could this be God’s work-speaking to Whoopi through these children? Perhaps her work with DS children will attest to the humanity of people… perhaps it will evoke a change of heart… Who knows?
Now, I’m praying for God to work through Whoopi. Not my plan, but his.
