I actually find myself almost feeling sorry for them trying to argue a point that I personally KNOW they are so wrong about. I wouldn't trade my son for any "typical" child. The points they try to make are simply untrue and uneducated. As far as Whoopi- Toys R Us should be very embarassed to have her as their special needs spokesperson. Over and over she has wanted to eliminate SN kids- not attract them to Toys R Us. I hope they will fire her and find someone that has a heart for our kids- not one that wants to abort them all. Life for us would be very different without a child with DS and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

What a moving video. We have gone through the same experience. Our son was born in 1994 with Trisomy 13 and only lived about 40 minutes. It was such a bitter sweet birth because he was a twin. We had to rejoice over his brother's birth, yet mourn his death. I was in the hospital for 10 weeks before they were born and all 3 of us almost didn't make it several times. I'll keep this family in my prayers, especially as they anticipate their daughter's birth soon. Our next pregnancy was a stillborn daughter with Trisomy 21. I can relate to picking out a casket and planning a funeral while pregnant. She died on Tuesday but was not born until Thursday. We spent the time making arrangements and finding a burial outfit for her.
But, I wouldn't trade my time with them for anything in the world. What a blessing they have been to our family.

Saw the Barbara Walters interview with Sarah Palin about Baby Trig. All BW could do was speak in the negative about DS children. She went through the litany of DS 'complications' as if to say "See? No wonder 90% of women decide to abort their DS babies". Nothing about what joy they bring. And then tried her BEST to get Sarah to say that when she found out her baby had DS, she thought about abortion. All Sarah said was that, for a split second she realized how it felt for other women who were told their babies had DS. She interviewed the siblings and again, seemed to be trying to 'lead' them to say something negative about their baby brother. She was sorely disappointed. Too bad, Barbara!

[...] With the release of Going Rogue, Sarah Palin has begun a high-profile tour, appearing on Oprah and this evening, on 20/20. Tonight’s show will highlight baby Trig. Let’s hope that any parents who are considering terminaton after a diagnosis of Down syndrome – or anything else, for that matter – will be able to watch tonight’s program and arrive at the conclusion that though Sarah is a remarkable woman, any mother - even in different circumstances and different political leanings – can make a choice for life.
I think Leticia summarized the interview very well. Whoopi said all children teach compassion, but I don't think she truly understands. My compassion and unconditional love have only increased as a result of John Michael being in our family. He opened our hearts and minds to people with special needs whom we may otherwise never have paid attention to. It's obvious Whoopi has her agenda and wasn't backing down to actually hear what Elizabeth had to say. Barbara Walters, in my opinion, having a relationship with a sibling who is/was mentally impaired, could only relate how difficult it was. I don't think she was saying, though, that her sister shouldn't have been born. Interesting exchange. I look forward to hearing more from Sarah Palin.

I have a new view of Whoopi today than before seeing her here. WOW!

Elizabeth; THANK YOU!

This is only a debate because of the unknown. Like Sarah said fear is the first reaction to the unknown.

Every Mom that I have been contacted about during this stage of decision, who have met my children - chose life because their fears where relieved after meeting my children!!! That speaks volumes for what needs to be done.

Sarah's point that every child has a destiny, is so well taken that it takes a lot of painful wrangling on Whoopi and Walter's parts to find some kind of rationale for denying that child a chance to fulfill his destiny. They make several attemptst to silence Elizabeth Hasselback who makes an excellent point that ALL children pose challenges to parents and that special needs children teach compassion, yet I think her point is made successfully.
I can't wait for the Sarah Show! Diane, do you think she'll invite you on?
